Fusion Energy at the Core of the Global Supply Chain —Insights from Our Center Director, Associate Professor Shutaro Takeda, Featured in The Denki Shimbun
News
On December 1, 2025, The Denki Shimbun published an article featuring the perspectives of our Center Director, Shutaro Takeda (Associate Professor at Keio University and Co-founder of Kyoto Fusioneering), regarding the supply chain of fusion energy.
In the article, Professor Takeda discusses how fusion energy is transitioning from a “dream technology” to a realistic and viable option, examining this shift through the lenses of energy security and economic security.
He highlights the rapid intensification of global competition, noting in particular that China is making substantial investments to secure leadership in fusion-related supply chains. The article also points out that the realization of fusion energy could fundamentally transform the structure of global energy supply.
Regarding market scale and economic impact, the fusion industry is projected to grow into a market worth up to one quadrillion yen annually. The article emphasizes the significant ripple effects such growth could have on the domestic economy. According to estimates by our Center, fusion energy demonstrates a higher domestic economic impact than other power sources such as solar and LNG, with a domestic economic multiplier exceeding 1.05. Furthermore, it is estimated to generate economic spillover effects amounting to approximately 2.05 times the initial construction and operational costs.
Our Center will continue to integrate expertise from academia, technology, policy, and industry to advance efforts toward realizing a future in which fusion energy supports society and enriches people’s lives.
